Bengals In Negotiations To Hire Teryl Austin As New Defensive Coordinator

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Bengals are currently in negotiations with Lions DC Teryl Austin to become Cincinnati’s new defensive coordinator.

  • According to Rapoport, no deal is done right now, but it’s headed that way.
  • Rapoport later added that unless Austin ends up getting the Lions’ head-coaching job, he will be the Bengals’ next defensive coordinator.

It’s been clear that Austin’s time in Detroit was coming to an end, even though he did interview for their head-coaching job last week. The Lions would not have allowed Austin to meet with the Bengals last Friday regarding their vacancy if they weren’t prepared to move on without him.

As for the Bengals, DC Paul Guenther is expected to be introduced as the Raiders new defensive coordinator under Jon Gruden.

Austin should be a decent addition to a Bengals’ coaching staff that is undergoing a good amount of restructuring this offseason.

Austin, 52, began his NFL coaching career with the Seahawks back in 2003 as their defensive backs coach. He had stints with the Cardinals and Ravens before the Lions hired him as their defensive coordinator back in 2014.

We’ll have more regarding the Bengals and Austin as the news is available.
