Big-Name Players Who Could Be On The Chopping Block This Offseason (via @CorryJoel)

Joel Corry of CBS Sports has put together a list of NFL players who could be on the chopping block following this offseason. The list includes a number of big-name players who are not living up to their contracts this season and will carry large cap figures in 2014.

Here’s a simple breakdown of the players Corry lists and their respective 2014 salaries and cap figures.

  • Bears DE Julius Peppers (33) – $14M base salary – $18.18M cap figure.
  • Browns QB Brandon Weeden (30) – $1.12M base salary – $2.2M cap figure.
  • Cowboys WR Miles Austin (29) – $5.5M base salary – $8.25M cap figure.
  • Jaguars TE Marcedes Lewis (29) – $6.7M base salary – $8.25M cap figure.
  • Jets QB Mark Sanchez (26) – $9M base salary – $13.1M cap figure.
  • Jets WR Santonio Holmes (29) – $8.25M base salary – $10.75M cap figure.
  • Rams CB Cortland Finnegan (29) – $6M base salary – $10M cap figure.
  • Seahawks WR Sidney Rice (27) – $8.5M base salary – $9.7M cap figure.
  • Texans QB Matt Schaub (29) – $10M base salary – $14.5M cap figure.
  • Texans S Ed Reed (35) – $4M base salary – $5.33M cap figure.
  • Titans RB Chris Johnson (28) – $8M base salary – $10M cap figure.
  • Titans DE Kamerion Wimbley (30) – $6M base salary – $7.8M cap figure.

There are some big names included in Corry’s list, but it’s hard to argue that all of these contracts far exceed the type of production these players have produced this season. Every year teams shed salary due to the fact that total contract dollars aren’t guaranteed in the NFL, so I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see most of these guys become free agents at some point.

Be sure to check out Corry’s article for a more in-depth breakdown of each players contract and how it relates to their respective team’s cap situation moving forward.
