Bills Could Field Trade Offers For RB C.J. Spiller?

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports mentions in his Bills training camp report that he expects Buffalo to field calls for one of their running backs as injuries start piling up around the NFL.

  • According to La Canfora, “Buffalo has more backs than it needs” and specifically mentions that RB C.J. Spillercould be the odd man out.”
  • La Canfora points to the fact that Spiller is entering the final year of his contract and there is “no extension in sight.
  • La Canfora expects veteran Fred Jackson to finish out his career with the team.

Beyond Jackson and Spiller, the Bills have Bryce Brown — who they traded for — and Anthony Dixon currently on their roster.

La Canfora writes that a “trade market for Spiller could well develop over the next month.”

This is certainly a surprising suggestion as Spiller is considered by many to be the Bills best running back. While the idea is interesting, it’s hard to put a lot of stock in the Bills trading Spiller.

Spiller, 26, is set to make $1,748,750 for the 2014 season and should be a sought after player if he ends up reaching the open market next year.

Last year, Spiller ran for 927 yards on 201 carries (4.6 YPC) and added two touchdowns. Pro Football Focus rated Spiller as the No. 51 running back out of 55 qualifying players.
