Bills Expected To Fire HC Rex Ryan After Season, GM Doug Whaley Likely To Return

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the widespread belief in NFL circles is that the Bills will make a head-coaching change after the regular season ends, or shortly before then, and part ways with HC Rex Ryan.

However, Bills sources have told Schefter that GM Doug Whaley is safe for next year, which means he should get the opportunity to hire his third head coach.

Multiple reports from last weekend said that Ryan’s tenure as the Bills’ head coach is believed to be nearing an end and he could be fired as soon as this past Monday.

“I’d say I’m 95 percent sure Rex is gone by the end of the season,” one source who has been in contact with owner Terry Pegula told Jason La Canforaand he could be out as soon as Monday.”

However, Monday came and went and Ryan is still coaching the Bills.

According to La Canfora, Ryan’s relationship with GM Doug Whaley and other team executives has “always been rocky” and the team believes they have assembled “superior talent” that should have produced better results than what they’ve seen this season. Beyond that, La Canfora says that the relationship between Ryan and Whaley “is not tenable” long term, and ownership is aware of this.

Ryan, 53, was hired by the Jets back in 2015 after he was fired by the Jets. In two years with the Bills, Ryan has produced a record of 14 and 15 (48.3 percent), which includes no playoff appearances.

We’ll have more regarding the Bills and Ryan as the news is available.
