Bills Willing To Look For Upgrades At Backup Quarterback

Bills HC Doug Marrone expressed a great deal of frustration regarding the team’s backup quarterback situation following Saturday’s preseason game.

“I’m not going to sit here and say I’m satisfied with the backup quarterback,” Marrone said, via the Buffalo News. “I’m not.”

Buffalo surprisingly brought Dennis Dixon in after starter E.J. Manuel departed over Jeff Tuel and Thad Lewis.

According to Marrone, they would be doing a huge disservice to everyone involved with the franchise if they didn’t look for upgrades elsewhere.

“Our conversations are always, ‘Hey, if we can better our football team, whatever we have to do, we will,’” Marrone said. “We wouldn’t be doing right to ourselves, the team, the fans, if we didn’t.

“If we felt we can upgrade ourselves by going outside and not do that, just because maybe we’re too comfortable, that’s not fair to anybody.”

Ian Rapoport suggests Saints backup QB Luke McCown as someone to keep an eye on. Teams like the Vikings have decent quarterback depth, so there is at least a remote chance the Bills could reach out to them regarding former first-round pick Christian Ponder.

Josh Freeman is currently the best available of quarterback on the open market, but it appears as though teams no longer view him as a decent backup option or he would already be in camp with someone.

We’ll have to see if Buffalo ends up making a move in the coming weeks.
