Bills Would Like To Re-Sign Free Agent RB C.J. Spiller

During an interview with WGR Sportsradio 550, Bills GM Doug Whaley said that they will “try to do [their] darndest” to re-sign RB C.J. Spiller in the coming months.

We believe so and we’re going to try to do our darndest to get this guy in the fold and get him back,” said Whaley, via BuffaloBills.com. “I’m sure he’s disappointed with how last year went with the injuries, but we want him to come back with us and get back to the form we know he can play at.

On Wednesday, new Bills HC Rex Ryan told reporters that he was hoping to have Spiller back next season.

I’ve met C.J. and obviously I have a great deal of respect for him having to try to stop him and things,” said Ryan. “One thing I think that he’s going to understand about me is I’m going to tell him what I believe to be the truth. All players seem to appreciate that.”

Ryan also made it clear that his offense will once again be focused on a “ground-and-pound” rushing attack, so keeping a dynamic player like Spiller in the fold would certainly fit with this approach, even if he’s not their clear-cut No. 1 running back.

Spiller, 27, will be an interesting free agent to monitor if he reaches the open market.

Last year, Toby Gerhart and Donald Brown signed the top deals for free agent running back, which came out to three-years, $10.5 million and just $4.5 million guaranteed.

Murray and Spiller should be able to do better than than this year, but it goes to show just how little teams are willing to pay for veteran running backs nowadays.

In 2014, Spiller was limited to appearing in nine games and rushing for 300 yards on 78 carries (3.8 YPC) to go along with 19 receptions for 125 yards receiving and one touchdown.

We have Spiller currently listed as the No. 48 player in our Top 50 Free Agents list.
