Blaine Gabbert’s Days As 49ers Starter Reportedly Numbered

Jason Cole of B/R reports that Blaine Gabbert‘s poor performance against the Seahawks could end up costing him the starting job for the 49ers.

Cole mentions that HC Chip Kelly has expressed concern over Colin Kaepernick‘s conditioning. However, Cole’s sources believe a change could be coming at some point in the near future.

On Monday, Kelly told reporters that Kaepernick remains their No. 2 quarterback because he’s still not 100 percent healthy right now.

Right now” seems like the operative words here, as he looks to be leaving the door open for a potential change at some point.

Gabbert, 26, is a former first-round pick of the Jaguars back in 2010. After three years in Jacksonville, he was traded to the 49ers in return for a sixth-round pick back in March of 2014.

Gabbert is currently in the final year of his two-year, $4 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $1.75 million for the 2016 season.

This year, Gabbert has thrown for 532 yards while completing 55.2 percent of his passes to go along with three touchdowns and three interceptions for the 49ers. He has also contributed 75 yards rushing and a touchdown on the ground. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 34 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.
