The New York Post reported this morning that New York Jets wide-receiver Braylon Edwards has been arrested for driving under the influence. The arrest took place early Tuesday morning and police have indicated that Edwards over twice the legal limit upon his arrest.
The New York Jets have since released a statement regarding Braylon Edwards arrest for drunk driving.
“We are very disappointed in Braylon’s actions this morning,” team media relations said, via ESPN. “The Player Protect program is in place for our organization to prevent this situation.”
The Player Protection program was created to offer rides home to any player that has been drinking in an attempt to prevent situations such as this.
A drunk driving violation falls under the leagues substance-abuse policy. For a first offense DUI, a player can be fined two game checks up to $50,000. NFL teams cannot hand out suspensions for DUI’s so it will remain up to the league to punish Edwards for his violation.
The Jets could still decide to punish Edwards but he could contest any disciplinary measures other than a fine due to the CBA.
It will be interesting to see how the Jets handle this situation and whether or not he is allowed to suit up for Sunday’s game against the Dolphins.
