49ers Sign CB Richard Sherman To Three-Year, $39M Deal

Update:

The San Francisco 49ers announced Sunday that they have officially signed CB Richard Sherman to a three-year deal.

“Richard is one of the premier competitors Kyle and I have ever encountered,” said General Manager John Lynch. “We look forward to him sharing his wealth of experience and his passion for the game of football with our team. Richard has long been looked at as the prototypical corner in our scheme and the opportunity to have him mentor our players was one we needed to attack. Most importantly, we are excited to have a championship caliber corner on the field for the 49ers.

Adam Schefter is reporting that the 49ers and CB Richard Sherman have reached an agreement tonight on a three-year deal.

  • According to Ian Rapoport, Sherman receives a three-year, $39 million contract.
  • Tom Pelissero reports that Sherman’s deal includes a $5M signing bonus, plus $2M base salary, $2M in 46-man roster bonuses, $1M playtime incentive and $3M Pro Bowl incentive in 2018.
  • Should Sherman make the Pro Bowl in 2018, another $16 million in base salary from 2019-2020 becomes guaranteed, per Pelissero.
  • In total, Sherman can make up to $13M in 2018 by reaching incentives, which is $2M more than his previous salary. Although, there were no incentives in that deal.

Schefter reported earlier in the day that there was a real chance Sherman visit to be San Francisco would be his last and it appears as though the two parties were able to get a deal done in the end to prevent him from meeting with other teams.

During his visit, Sherman took a physical with for the 49ers to give them an idea of how he’s healing from the torn Achilles he suffered late last year.

The Titans, Lions, Raiders, Texans, Bucs and Packers reportedly showed preliminary interest in Sherman and had he left his visit with the 49ers, his next meeting was going to be with the Lions.

It’s worth mentioning that signing Sherman to a contract won’t impact a team’s 2019 compensatory picks, given that he was released this offseason.

Sherman, 29, is a former fifth-round pick of the Seahawks back in 2011. He was entering the final of his five-year, $58.789 million contract that includes $40 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $11 million for the 2018 season when the Seahawks released him in a move that freed up $11 million of available cap space.

In 2017, Sherman appeared in nine games and recorded 35 tackles, two interceptions and seven pass defenses for the Seahawks. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 33 cornerback out of 120 qualifying players.

We had him featured in our Top 100 – 2018 NFL Free Agents list.
