Raj Mathai is reporting that the 49ers have reached an agreement with QB Jimmy Garoppolo on a contract extension that will make him the highest-paid player in the NFL.

  • Mike Garafolo confirms the news and adds that Garoppolo receives a five-year, $137.5 million contract from the 49ers that is the biggest deal in NFL history on an average-per-year basis.
  • Mike Maiocco reports that Garoppolo’s contract includes $74 million in total guarantees.
  • According to Adam Schefter, Garoppolo’s contract will include close to $90 million over the first three years of the agreement.

This contract will pay Garoppolo $27.5 million per year and accounts for just over 15 percent of the 49ers’ salary cap. Garoppolo will be under team control through the 2022 season.

Matthew Stafford previously had the highest total value contract in the NFL at $135 million and $60 million guaranteed.

Last weekend, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that the 49ers and Garoppolo were moving closer toward an agreement on a long-term contract extension after negotiations between the two parties gained “significant momentum” so this doesn’t come as a complete surprise.

Garoppolo, 26, is a former second-round pick of the Patriots back in 2014. He is entering the final year of his four-year, $3,483,898 rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $820,077 to go along with a $75,000 workout bonus for the 2017 season.

The Patriots traded him to the 49ers at this year’s draft deadline in return for a 2018 second-round pick.

Garoppolo was in line to be an unrestricted free agent next month.

In 2017, Garoppolo appeared in six games and threw for 1,560 yards while completing 67.4 percent of his passes to go along with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 10 quarterback out of 40 qualifying players.

We had him featured in our Top 100 – 2018 NFL Free Agents list.
