Bashaud Breeland Fails Physical, Won’t Be Signing With Panthers

The Carolina Panthers announced Friday that CB Bashaud Breeland failed his physical and will not be signing with the team. The Panthers listed Breeland’s failed physical as a non-football injury.

  • According to Ian Rapoport, Breeland cut his foot in a non-football injury and it got infected. Rapoport adds that Breeland is now a few months away from being able to pass a physical.
  • Mike Garafolo reports that there was a non-football incident that occurred recently, but it was not expected to hold up a deal.
  • Breeland tells David Newton that he cut the back of his left foot while in the Dominican Republic on March 4th and will need to have skin grafted to repair the injury.
  • Breeland apparently first suffered this injury back in fourth grade and has had similar skin grafts performed. Beyond that Breeland was able to walk on it and said it never was an issue through high school, college or while with the Redskins.

Breeland and the Panthers agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal that includes $11 million guaranteed and $9.5 million fully guaranteed.

Breeland, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Redskins back in 2014. He played out the final year of his four-year, $2.706 million contract and made a base salary of $690,000 for the 2017 season.

Breeland is testing the free agent market for the first time in his NFL career.

In 2017, Breeland appeared in 14 games for the Redskins and recorded 48 tackles, one interception returned for a touchdown and 16 pass defenses. He also contributed 280 kick return yards. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 54 cornerback out of 120 qualifying players.
