Chiefs Trading QB Alex Smith To Redskins

Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star reports that the Chiefs are trading Alex Smith to the Redskins.

  • Ian Rapoport reports that the Chiefs receive a 2018 third-round pick and a player to be named tomorrow.
  • Mary Kay Cabot reports that the Browns tried to trade for Smith before the Chiefs reached an agreement with the Redskins.
  • According to Adam Schefter, six teams expressed interest in Smith this morning.
  • Field Yates reports that the Redskins are sending CB Kendall Fuller to the Chiefs as part of the trade for Smith.

According to Paylor, there’s no word on the compensation for Smith and the trade can’t officially be completed until March 14. However, Paylor’s sources say that there’s a deal in place and the two parties will proceed with the trade once they’re able to process the transaction.

Kansas City was clearly prepared to trade Smith this offseason and while a lot of speculation centered around the Browns, Jaguars, Bills and Cardinals, it appears as though the Redskins stepped up to get this deal done.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media mentioned during an appearance on 1500 ESPN (per Matthew Coller) that after speaking to people at the Senior Bowl, the Chiefs could be looking for a second-round pick and another future pick in a trade for Smith, so that’s something to keep an eye on with the deal.

It’s worth mentioning that the Redskins will need to work out a long-term deal with Smith to justify parting with draft compensation for him.

This, of course, means that Washington will be moving on from Kirk Cousins and allow him to sign with another team while the Chiefs will move forward with Patrick Mahomes as their starting quarterback for the 2018 season.

Smith, 33, is a former first-round pick of the 49ers back in 2005. After seven years in San Francisco, Smith was traded to the Chiefs in 2013.

Smith is in the fourth year of his five-year, $76 million contract that includes $45 million guaranteed and stands to make a base salary of $10.8 million for the 2017 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Smith will free up $17 million of available cap space while creating $3.5 million in dead money.

In 2017, Smith appeared in 15 games for the Chiefs and threw for 4,042 yards while completing 67.5 percent of his passes to go along with 26 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 355 yards and a touchdown. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 7 quarterback out of 40 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding the Smith trade as the news is available.
