Falcons Sign GM Thomas Dimitroff To Three-Year Extension

The Atlanta Falcons have announced a three-year extension for GM Thomas Dimitroff on Monday.

“I’ve always believed continuity in leadership is important to achieving the highest levels of success, be it with our football team or our businesses,” said Arthur Blank, Atlanta Falcons Chairman and Owner. “I’ve seen the relationship between Dan Quinn and Thomas Dimitroff grow over the last two years and we’re seeing the fruits of their shared vision and plan coming together in our recent draft classes and free agent acquisitions. My expectations remain very high. By extending Thomas, we expect to see their partnership continue to grow and deliver results for our team and our fans, on and off the field.”

“I want to thank Arthur for demonstrating the confidence in what we are building here,” Dimitroff said. “I have always believed it is about a head coach and general manager sharing a common vision on the type of players they are looking for and how to build a roster. The partnership with Dan has formed quickly and I know we are building a team here that everyone can be proud of. I understand that we still have work to do, but I know we have the people in place to reach the ultimate goal here in Atlanta.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Falcons and GM Thomas Dimitroff are closing in on a long-term extension that is expected to be completed at some point in the near future.

• Jay Glazer reports that Dimitroff will receive a three-year contract extension from the Falcons.

Back in June, Dimitroff admitted that he was entering the 2016 season on the hot seat, so things have really changed for him after a strong start to the season.

“Of course, I’m on the hot seat,” Dimitroff said, via the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “This is a very urgent league right now. This is about now. I understand it. My job is to provide them with a winner.”

Dimitroff has reportedly been on the hot seat for a few years now, but Falcons owner Arthur Blank announced back in January that they would be retaining him for at least one more year.

The Falcons restructured their front office a bit last year and gave Scott Pioli more say in personnel matters. Beyond that, HC Dan Quinn also has say in the team’s roster moves, so the thinking was that another poor season could have been it for Dimitroff and his time in Atlanta.

Since Dimitroff took over as the Falcons’ GM in 2008, Atlanta has a record of 80-57 (58.3 percent) which includes four playoff appearances and one win.
