Jets Cut RB C.J. Spiller & WR Jeremy Ross

The New York Jets announced Tuesday that they’ve placed WR Jeremy Ross and RB C.J. Spiller on waivers.

  • Jets signed WR Darius Jennings to their practice squad.
  • Jets released WR Mario Alford from their practice squad.

Spiller, 29, is a former first-round pick of the Bills back in in 2010. He spent five years in Buffalo before signing a four-year, $16 million contract that included $9 million guaranteed with the Saints.

Spiller was set to make a base salary of $1.7 million for the 2016 season when the Saints cut him loose. The Seahawks later signed him to a contract but released him back in October.

The Jets signed him to a contract few weeks later.

In 2016, Spiller appeared in six games for the Seahawks and Jets and ran for 18 yards on six carries to go along with six receptions for 50 yards receiving and one touchdown.

Ross, 28, originally signed on with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of California back in 2011. He played briefly for the Colts before joining the Packers in October of 2012.

The Lions would later sign him to a contract and give him an opportunity to their kick returner where Ross showed some ability. However, he was among the team’s final roster cuts before signing on to the Ravens’ practice squad.

Ross eventually signed on with the Raiders and finished out the year in Oakland. However, they didn’t tender him a contract as a restricted free agent.

The Jets signed him in April only to cut him loose coming out of the preseason. Ross has been on and off of the active roster since then.

In 2016, Ross has been active in four  games and totaled 224 kick return yards for the Jets.
