Jets Bench QB Ryan Fitzpatrick In Favor Of Geno Smith

Update:

Jets HC Todd Bowles confirmed that they are, in fact, bench Ryan Fitzpatrick and starting Geno Smith for their Week 7 game against the Ravens.

“Geno’s our starter. Ryan’s the No. 2,” Bowles said of the decision. “I felt like it was time for a change. This was strictly my call.”

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Jets are planning to name Geno Smith their new starting quarterback on Wednesday.

Jets HC Todd Bowles left the door open to possibly make a quarterback change this week, so this doesn’t come as a complete surprise. Although, it means that Ryan Fitzpatrick is headed to the bench after what has been a very disappointing season for him and the Jets’ offense.

Smith, 26, is a former second-round pick of the Jets back in 2013. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $5.019 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $675,000 for the 2016 season before testing the open market next year.

In 2016, Smith has appeared in one game and thrown for 31 yards while completing four of six pass attempts and one interception.

Fitzpatrick, 33, signed a one-year, $12 million contract that includes another $3 million available in incentives with the Jets after a long standoff. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent next year.

In 2016, Fitzpatrick has appeared in six games and completed 57 percent of his passes for 1,441 yards, five touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
