Packers Sign HC Mike McCarthy To One-Year Extension

Rob Demovsky reports that the Packers have signed HC Mike McCarthy to a one-year extension through the 2019 season.

  • Tom Silverstein confirms the report and adds that this extension was actually agreed to during the season.

McCarthy was entering the final year of his contract, so this is really just to prevent him from being a lame-duck head coach in 2018.

His future with the Packers could still be up in the air, depending on how things go next season and whether or not the team’s next GM wants to keep him in place as their head coach.

McCarthy, 54, began his NFL coaching career with the Chiefs back in 1993 as an offensive quality control coordinator. He bounced around with the Packers, Saints and 49ers before the Packers hired him as their head coach in 2006.

During his 12-year tenure in Green Bay, McCarthy has led the Packers to a record of 121-70-1 (63.3 percent), which includes nine playoff appearances and a Super Bowl title in 2010.
