This comes just a day after the Colts locked up TE Jack Doyle to a three-year extension. It’s also a pretty good indication that Martellus Bennett will not be returning to the Patriots for the 2017 season.

Allen, 27, is a former third-round pick of the Colts back in 2012. He signed a four-year, $29.4 million contract that included $16 million with the Colts last year and stands to make a base salary of $2.5 million for the 2017 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading Allen will free up $2,937,500 of available cap space for the Colts while creating $3 million in dead money.

In 2016, Allen appeared in 14 games for the Colts and caught 35 passes for 406 yards receiving and six touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 41 tight end out of 63 qualifying players.
