Patriots Trade WR Brandin Cooks To Rams For Draft Picks

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Patriots are trading WR Brandin Cooks and a fourth-round pick to the Rams for the No. 23 overall pick and a sixth-round pick.

According to Schefter, the Patriots and Rams have discussed a potential Cooks trade for over a month and before Los Angeles spoke to the Giants about a potential Odell Beckham Jr. trade. Ultimately, the Rams felt this was the better deal to make.

Trade details:

Rams get:

  • WR Brandin Cooks
  • 2018 fourth-round pick (#136)

Patriots get:

  • 2018 first-round pick (#23)
  • 2018 sixth-round pick (#198)

This trade officially takes the Rams out of the running for either Odell Beckham Jr and Rob Gronkowski, who have come up as potential trade targets for Los Angeles.

Cooks, 24, is a former first-round pick of the Saints back in 2014. He was entering the final year of his four-year, $8.4 million contract and set to make a base salary of $781,599 for the 2017 season when he was traded to the Patriots last year.

New England later picked up his fifth-year option for the 2018 season, which will cost the Rams $8,459,000 million.

Cooks is in line to be an unrestricted free agent next year.

In 2017, Cooks appeared in all 16 games for the Patriots and caught 65 passes for 1,082 yards receiving and seven touchdowns. Cooks also rushed for 40 yards on nine carries. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 36 receiver out of 116 qualifying players.
