Raiders Fire Defensive Coordinator Ken Norton Jr

Mike Silver of NFL Network is reporting that the Raiders are firing defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr.

  • According to Michael GehlkenJohn Pagano is expected to assume defensive play-calling duties for the Raiders moving forward.

Oakland has already announced the move:

After careful thought, I have made a difficult decision to part ways with Ken Norton, Jr. as defensive coordinator,” said Head Coach Jack Del Rio. “I have the utmost respect for Ken as a person and as a coach, but I feel that moving John Pagano into the play-calling role will best utilize his wealth of experience. I appreciate Ken’s passion and commitment to the Raiders since coming aboard and wish him the best going forward.

The Raiders’ defense has been underwhelming the past few years and with the unit still struggling, it can’t hurt to see what a change could do for them moving forward.

Norton Jr, 51, began his NFL coaching career with the Seahawks back in 2010 as their linebackers coach. After five years in Seattle, Norton Jr departed to become the Raiders’ defensive coordinator in 2015.

Oakland currently ranks No. 26 in total yards allowed, No. 17 in rushing yards allowed, No. 27 in passing yards allowed and No. 24 in total points allowed.

The Raiders’ defense currently has zero interceptions on the season, which happens to be an NFL record. They’re also tied for last in sacks and are allowing a 113.3 quarterback rating to opposing quarterbacks.
