Raiders Fire GM Reggie McKenzie

Update:

The Oakland Raiders officially announced that they’ve fired GM Reggie McKenzie on Monday.

Here’s the statement from the team:

“The Raiders have released Reggie McKenzie from his duties as General Manager.  We are grateful for everything Reggie has done for this organization as a player, executive and member of the Raider family.  We wish the best for Reggie, June and the entire McKenzie family.

“The Raiders will immediately begin a search for a new front office executive and will have no further comment until that process is complete.”

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie had a meeting with his scouts on Monday and informed them he was fired.

According to Rapoport, McKenzie was given the chance to stay the season, but is not expected to do so.

On Sunday, Jason La Canfora reported that Raiders were expected to make “considerable changes” in 2019 and McKenzie was not going to return to the team along with several other members of the scouting and football operations staff, as HC Jon Gruden takes full control of the organization.

Gruden declined to comment on the report from Sunday that the team is likely to move on from McKenzie after the season.

“I don’t have any comment on that,” Gruden said, via Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “We’re going to build this team back. I know that. We’re going to bring the Raiders back.”

There has been speculation for months that McKenzie was likely out in Oakland and Gruden could try to bring in Bruce Allen as a replacement.

McKenzie, 55, is a former 10th-round pick of the Raiders back in 1985. He played for the Raiders, Cardinals and 49ers before becoming an NFL executive in 1994.

After 18 years in Green Bay, McKenzie was hired by the Raiders as their GM in 2012. During his six years in Oakland, McKenzie’s teams have gone 39-70 including one playoff appearance.
