Raiders & QB Derek Carr Finalize Record Five-Year, $125M Deal

The Oakland Raiders and QB Derek Carr have now officially finalized a five-year, $125 million contract that will make him the highest paid NFL player in NFL history, according to Ian Rapoport.

  • According to Tom Pelissero, Carr’s contract includes $70 million in guarantees and $40M fully guaranteed at signing.
  • Dan Graziano reports that Carr receives $25m in year one, which breaks down to a $12.5m signing bonus, a $7.5m roster bonus paid on June 30 and a $5m base salary.
  • In 2018, Carr receives a $15m roster bonus fully guaranteed at signing to go along with a $7.4m base salary that becomes fully guaranteed in February 2018, a $100,000 workout bonus.
  • In 2019, Carr has $20m in money guaranteed for injury at signing and it becomes fully guaranteed in Feb 2019.
  • There’s another $3 million or so of money guaranteed for injury as part of his 2020 salary worth around $20m.
  • Neither of his 2021 and 2022 salaries is guaranteed.
  • In terms of payouts, Carr receives $25M in 2017, $47.5M over first 2 years and $67.5M over first 3 years, according to Albert Breer.
  • Breer adds this contract is essentially a two-year, $47.5M deal with team options.

Adam Schefter reported yesterday that the two sides were close to a deal and it was going to be finalized at some point in the near future.

Recent reports mentioned that Carr could end up securing as much as $25 million per year as part of a long-term extension, so this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

The Raiders made it clear that locking up their young quarterback was a priority for them. Carr’s deal tops Colts QB Andrew Luck as the highest paid player at $24.6 million per year to become the NFL’s highest-paid player of all time.

Other quarterbacks around the NFL like Matthew Stafford, Kirk Cousins, and Aaron Rodgers are all in line for new deals and the specifics of Carr’s new contract could play a major part in their future negotiations.

Carr, 26, is a former second-round pick of the Raiders back in 2014. He is currently in the final year of his four-year, $5,371,802 contract and stands to make a base salary of $977,519 for the 2017 season.

In 2016, Carr had thrown for 3,933 yards while completing 63.7 percent of his passes to go along with 28 touchdowns and six interceptions. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 6 overall quarterback out of 34 qualifying players.
