Sam Bradford Informs Eagles He Wants To Be Traded

Update:

Following the news that Sam Bradford has requested a trade out of Philadelphia, Eagles executive VP Howie Roseman said: “I want to reiterate our support for Sam Bradford. He is our starting quarterback.” (John Clark)

Roseman stressed that he’s just missing voluntary workouts right now, and added that they “look forward to seeing Sam again in the near future.” (John Clark)

  • Mike Klis reports that the Eagles haven’t given Bradford permission to seek a trade as of now.
  • An NFL source tells Jeff Darlington to not dismiss probability the Eagles already planned to explore a Bradford trade regardless of his trade request.
  • Darlington mentions that Chase Daniel is a perfect bridge to presumed No. 2 overall pick Carson Wentz, as he knows HC Doug Pederson‘s system, and can be their long-term backup option.
  • Darlington points out that the Eagles are already on hook for $11 million no matter what happens with Bradford, but if the dealt him, they’d at least recoup a draft pick.
  • According to Darlington, the rest of Bradford’s deal is considered more friendly for a trade partner.
  • Should Bradford miss all of training camp, he would forfeit 25 percent of his signing bonus and even more than that if the holds out into the regular season. (Ian Rapoport)

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Eagles have been informed Sam Bradford wants to be traded and he will not be showing up for their offseason program any longer.

  • Ian Rapoport reports that the Eagles were “blindsided” by Bradford’s trade request. However, they reportedly have not budged on their view he is their starter.

This comes in direct contrast to a report from Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports that said Bradford had not asked to be traded. Beyond that, Robinson mentioned that the Eagles have no plans to part with Bradford, even though they’re prepared to use their No. 2 overall pick on a quarterback.

Sources told Schefter last week that Bradford is not happy with the Eagles’ decision to move up in the draft for a quarterback.

He’s hot,” one source tells Schefter. “Who wouldn’t be? This is Philly saying, ‘We don’t see (you) as long-term answer.’ He’s mad and wants to show everyone who’s best.’’

However, Eagles GM Howie Roseman told reporters that Bradford will be their starting quarterback this season while adding that they have no plans to make him available for trade.

Many were wondering if the Eagles could make Bradford available for trade, seeing as the Broncos and Jets are both in the market for starting quarterbacks. However, there are obvious obstacles to trading Bradford at this point.

Joel Corry points out that trading Bradford before June 2 would leave them with an $11 million 2016 salary cap charge because of his signing bonus. If they wanted until after June 1, these figures would improve to $5.5 million (2016) and $5.5 million (2017) in the dead money.

Albert Breer added that the second year of Bradford’s contract looks smart now, as it puts the Eagles in position to trade him after the 2016 season if their young quarterback is ready to take over.

Bradford, 28, signed a two-year, $36 million contract that included $26 million guaranteed with the Eagles over a month ago. He stands to make base salaries of $7 million and $13 million over the next two years.

According to OverTheCap.com, trading would free up just $1.5 million in available cap space while creating a staggering $11 million in dead money.

In 2015, Bradford appeared in 14 games for the Eagles and threw for 3,725 yards while completing 65 percent of his passes to go along with 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

We’ll have more regarding Bradford’s future with the Eagles as the news is available.
