Texans Inform ILB Brian Cushing He’s Being Released

John McClain reports that the Texans have told ILB Brian Cushing that he’ll be released sometime before the league year begins March 14.

Regarding the news of his pending release, Cushing tested Mark Berman: “It’s all good man and part of the business.

Cushing has come as a potential cap casualty in recent years, so this doesn’t come as a big surprise. There were a number of factors working against Cushing including his cap figure, recent injuries and suspensions along with the emergence of Zach Cunningham and Dylan Cole.

Cushing, 31, is a former first-round pick of the Texans back in 2009. He was entering in the fifth year of his six-year, $55.643 million contract that includes $21 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $7.25 million for the 2018 season.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Cushing will free up $7,640,625 of available cap space while creating $1.2 million in dead money.

Cushing received a 10 game suspension last year for violating the league’s PED policy that cost him over $4 million from his contract.

In 2017, Cushing appeared in five games and recorded 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
