Brees and Saints No Closer To Long-Term Deal

Adam Schefter of ESPN has reported that QB Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints are no closer to a long-term deal.

The Saints franchise QB becomes an even more important piece with each passing day, as a number of players join coaches on the couch due to suspensions in the wake of the bounty program.  Saints ownership has repeated that talks with Brees are on-going, and that efforts would be redoubled after the draft, but apparently no headway has been made.

Brees has been clear about his refusal to play under a franchise tag, referencing his last season with the Chargers where he sustained a serious injury in the last game of the season that he played under the tag.  At this stage, Brees has contended that he would rather holdout than play without the protection of a long-term deal in place.

Fans of the Saints might expect that with the combined news of owner Tom Benson’s purchase of the New Orleans Hornets and the regularly developing news on the fallout from the bounty scandal, would spur the talks with Brees.  However, as of yet, no such developments have been seen.
