Brian Orakpo “Absolutely” Hopes To Re-Sign With Washington

Redskins OLB Brian Orakpo mentioned that he “absolutely” hopes to re-sign with the team that drafted hi back in 2009.

Right now this is home,” said Orakpo, per Mark Maske of the Washington Post. “So I would love to continue to finish my career as a Redskin. Obviously we’re 3-9 so it’s a disappointing season. But that doesn’t take away from what I know we’re capable of. If we get our core guys back, add a few people here and there with all the money that we’re receiving back from all the salary-cap issues that we had, I think we’ll be up for running at another title shot again the following year. But like I said, we’ve got to finish this last quarter and then everything else will take care of itself with the contracts and with who’s here, who’s not, stuff like that.

Orakpo, 27, is in the final year of his rookie contract and stands to make a lot of money on the open market next year, despite the fact that he’s dealt with a few serious injuries in the past few seasons. In fact, the reason why the Redskins allowed Orakpo to enter the season without an extension was because they wanted to see how he recovered from a season-ending torn pectoral muscle.

In the past four games, Orakpo has totaled 5.5 sacks and has 38 career sacks in just 61 games. Washington will have the cap space to lock him up long-term and could always use their franchise tag on him if needed.

We have Orakpo listed as the No. 9 player in our Top 50 – 2014 Free Agents list.
