Broncos DC Jack Del Rio A Candidate For USC Coaching Job, Other Speculative Options For USC

Update:

Joan Niesen of the Denver Post reports that a team source informed him that Broncos DC Jack Del Rio will not leave the team during the 2013 season for the USC job.

A previous report indicated that USC intends to replace Lane Kiffin with Ed Orgeron for the interim, which means they could hold off on conducting a coaching search until after the season.

ESPN is reporting that Ed Orgeron will be USC’s interim head coach replacing Lane Kiffin, per Bruce Feldman.

Mike Freeman of the Bleacher Report was first to report that Broncos DC Jack Del Rio is “among the front-runners” for the USC Trojans coaching job now that Lane Kiffin has been fired.

Del Rio is a former USC standout who was mentioned as possible replacement for Pete Carroll, but he elected to remain with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Del Rio is believed to have a good deal of interest in the position.

  • Mike Silver reports that he doesn’t expect Rams HC Jeff Fisher to have any interest in the USC job.
  • CBS’ Bruce Feldman lists: Texas A&M HC Kevin Sumlin, Boise State HC Chris Petersen, USC assistant Steve Sarkisian, Vanderbilt HC James Franklin, Fresno State HC Tim DeRuyter and San Francisco 49ers OC Greg Roman.

It would be tough for the Broncos to lose their defensive coordinator not even half way through the season. Del Rio is no guarantee to leave, but a lot of connected people believe he’s a strong candidate for the job. We’ll have more regarding this topic.
