Broncos DE Derek Wolfe Suspended 4 Games For PED Violation

The Denver Broncos announced that DE Derek Wolfe has been suspended four games for violation of league’s policy on performance enhancing substances on Friday.

Wolfe released a statement regarding his suspension:

Please allow me to offer my most sincere apology to everyone in the Broncos organization, and especially to my teammates and our fans. During the off-season I took a medication which is on the banned substance list.  The medication is not a substance which would enhance my on-field performance in any way, and I genuinely was unaware that it was prohibited, but players are responsible for what is in their bodies. I will certainly exercise far greater caution in the future and will seek advice relating to the permissibility of any and all medications. I’m very disappointed that I can’t help my team for the first four weeks of the season, but I look forward to a great season with the Broncos and can’t wait to get back on the field in week five.

Reports from a month ago had mentioned that Wolfe bulked up 290 pounds this offseason after he played at or below 260 last year while recovering from seizures.

Wolfe, 25, is entering the final year of his four-year, $6,247,675 rookie contract and stands to make a base salary of $1,100,018 for the upcoming season.

In 2014, Wolfe appeared in all 16 games for the Broncos and recorded 35 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 30 defensive end in a 4-3 defense out of 59 qualifying players.
