Broncos & Elvis Dumervil Have Reached An “Impasse” In Contract Talks

Update:

Mike Klis of the Denver Post writes that the Broncos and DE Elvis Dumervil appear to have reached an impasse in talks regarding a restructured contract.

“Elvis has been working out, he’s healthy, he feels great,” Magid said. “He wants to stay with the Broncos. Right now, we’re waiting to hear back from them.”

Klis adds that there has been “no communication” as of late between the two sides, there’s a good chance Dumervil could be playing elsewhere next season.

Update:

There’s a lot of speculation floating around that the Broncos could look to replace Elvis Dumervil with free agent DE Dwight Freeney.

Freeney actually mentioned that Peyton Manning tried recruiting him to sign with Denver and he could come at a much reduced cost.

This is purely speculative, but could be something to watch.

—————-

Vic Lombardi of CBS4 reports that the Denver Broncos are expected to approach DE Elvis Dumervil regarding a pay cut that would reduce his $12 million salary for the 2013 season.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports adds that there’s a chance that this “situation could end up with his release.

Dumervil, 29, has yet to meet with the Broncos regarding this matter. He has base salaries of   $10 million and $8.19 million coming his way in 2014 and 2015, which comes out to around $31 million over the next three seasons.

Lombardi adds that the Broncos will likely ask him to agree to “similar money over 4-5 years.

Ian Rapoport tweets that Dumervil’s contract salary becomes guaranteed on fifth day of league year, which means the Broncos may release him if he’s unwilling to do so.

Releasing him would require the Broncos to pay him $4.869 million.

Dumervil can obviously be an effective pass rusher for them, but he’s nowhere near the complete player that Von Miller is. He has a considerable amount of money coming his way, but was rated as a below average defensive end last season by Pro Football Focus.

We should know more regarding the situation in the days leading up to free agency.
