Broncos Officially Promote Joe Woods To Defensive Coordinator

Update:

The Denver Broncos announced Tuesday that they’ve officially promoted Joe Woods to defensive coordinator.

Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post reports that the Broncos are naming Joe Woods their new defensive coordinator.

This doesn’t come as a big surprise, as Alex Marvez mentioned a few weeks ago that Woods was likely to replace Wade Phillips as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2017.

New Broncos HC Vance Joseph told reporters during his introductory interview that he wasn’t interested in calling plays, which means Woods should get an opportunity to show the defense in 2017.

Woods, 46, began his NFL coaching career with the Buccaneers back in 2004 as their defensive backs coach. After a few years in Tampa Bay, Woods took the same position with the Vikings where he remained for eight years before catching on with the Raiders in 2014.

The Broncos brought him in as their defensive backs coach a few years ago.

In 2016, the Broncos’ defense ranks No. 4 in yards allowed, No. 1 in passing yards allowed, No. 28 in rushing yards allowed and No. 9 in points per game.
