Broncos Officially Use Exclusive Franchise Tag On OLB Von Miller

The Denver Broncos have officially placed the exclusive franchise tag on Von Miller, according to Jason La Canfora.

Reports from earlier in the day mentioned that the two parties were expected to continue discussing a long-term deal with Miller leading up to today’s deadline, but the expectation was all along that he was going to be tagged.

The franchise tag will run the Broncos $15.701 million fully guaranteed for the 2016 season, but won’t prevent them from negotiating a long-term deal that would reduce this figure and offer them some additional cap space

This, of course, means that QB Brock Osweiler and DE Malik Jackson are well positioned to reach the free agent market next week.

Miller, 26, played out his four-year, $21 million rookie contract, and is playing out the 2015 season under the fifth-year option the Broncos picked up last year.

In 2015, Miller appeared all 16 games and recorded 35 tackles, 11 sacks, three fumble recoveries and four forced fumbles. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 2 outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense out of 53 qualifying players.

We have Miller featured in our Top 100 – 2016 Free Agents list.
