Broncos & Patriots Possible Trade Options For Bucs CB Darrelle Revis?

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports first reported last week that “several teams” have reached out to the Buccaneers regarding the availability of CB Darrelle Revis.

According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, “there’s a theory in league circles” that other teams want Revis more the Buccaneers are willing  to trade him.

It’s worth mentioning that the team has downplayed any interest in trading Revis, and it sounds like they are comfortable keeping him.

However, Florio writes that recent speculation has the Patriots and Broncos as the two teams to watch in regards to a potential Revis trade.

Florio points to the fact that Denver and New England both have aging quarterbacks and limited windows to win with them in place as the main reason why these two teams could consider pursuing Revis at some point.

The Patriots will have to make a decision regarding impending free agent CB Aqib Talib in the coming weeks, and Florio mentions they could use Revis as a contingency option of sorts.

Meanwhile, the Broncos are expected to approach veteran CB Champ Bailey regarding a pay cut this offseason, which makes sense given that he has a $10 million cap figure and is coming off of a down year. With this in mind, a trade for Revis would result in a cap increase of $6 million, according to Florio, but that would likely be offset based on the improved play at corner.

Last year, Revis totaled 50 tackles, one sack, two interceptions and two forced fumbles over the the course of 16 games. Pro Football Focus has Revis rated as the No. 1 cornerback in the league last season.

His contract is interesting in that it includes no guaranteed money, but is structured so that he receives an annual base salary of $13 million along with $1.5 million roster bonuses.

These ideas are purely speculative, and there hasn’t been any recent reports that would indicated that a trade is even a realistic possibility right now. Even so, I’m sure we’ll continue to hear more about Revis possibly being traded in the coming months.
