Broncos Placing TE Jake Butt & QB Chad Kelly On Injured Reserve

Broncos HC Vance Joseph told reporters that rookie TE Jake Butt and QB Chad Kelly will both be placed on injured reserve in the coming days, per Nicki Jhabvala.

“We were hoping Jake could come back and help us at this point, but he’s not ready yet,” Joseph said of Butt, per Jhabvala.

Both Butt and Kelly opened the season on the team’s NFI list.

Butt, 22, was drafted by the Broncos in the fifth-round of this year’s draft out of Michigan. Before he suffered an ACL injury last season, Butt was considered a first-round talent and one of the best tight ends in a very deep class.

Butt signed a four-year, $2.7 million contract with the Broncos that included a $300,948 signing bonus. He stands to make base salaries of $465,000 and $555,000 over the first two years of the agreement.

During his college career at Michigan, Butt caught 138 passes for 1,646 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns over the course of 43 games.

Kelly, 23, was selected with the No. 253 overall pick in the seventh round of this year’s draft by the Broncos. He signed a four-year, $2.464 million contract that included a $64,270 signing bonus and stands to make base salaries of $465,000 and $555,000 over the first two years of the agreement.

During his college career, Kelly threw for 6,858 yards while completing 63.9 percent of his passes to go along with 50 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
