Broncos Plan On Franchising K Matt Prater?

Update: Kilis has since changed his stance on the issue of Prater receiving the Broncos’ tag.  He quotes John Elway on his desire to sign Prater to a long-term contact: “We don’t want to use it. We’d like to get a deal done.’’

The Broncos have plenty of cap room, meaning this projected move will have a minimal impact on other team signings.  It will, however, free them up to use the franchise tag on a position of higher dollar value.

Mike Kilis of the Denver Post writes that the Broncos will most likely use their franchise tag on K Matt Prater.

Klis mentions that the Broncos will have 17 free agent players to deal with in the coming weeks but sees Prater as “the strongest candidate for the franchise tag.”

The franchise tag for a kicker will come out to $2.6 million which is down from last year’s total of $3.176. Prater led the league in touchback percentage last season and managed to kick some pretty memorable game-winning field goals for the Broncos last season so it’s safe to assume that they’ll make sure he’s back in 2012.
