Broncos & Browns Discussed Trade Involving LT Joe Thomas

Update:

Mike Klis of 9News confirms reports that the Broncos and Browns discussed a potential trade involving LT Joe Thomas.

However, Klis’ sources said that no offer was made and the two teams just “talked conceptually.”

  • Klis believes Thomas is worth second round pick and maybe late-round throw-in, given that he has $4,66 million left on his 2015 salary.
  • Klis adds that after committing $2.3 million to TE Vernon Davis following their recent trade with the 49ers, the Broncos may have to move some money around in order to squeeze in Thomas’ $4.66 million in remaining salary.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Browns have been asking for two first-round picks in return for LT Joe Thomas.

According to Schefter, the Browns aren’t going to get this type of return from an NFL before today’s 4pm EST deadline.

Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland reports that the Browns previously had trade discussions with the Broncos involving Pro Bowl LT Joe Thomas.

  • Jason Cole reports that the Browns wanted first and second-round picks in return for Thomas.

According to Grossi, the Broncos were willing to part with their 2016 first-round pick in the deal, but the Browns wanted LB Shaq Barrett, which reportedly killed the deal.

Grossi mentions that Thomas is likely the only player on their roster capable of netting them a future first-round pick.

Denver lost LT Ryan Clady and rookie OT Ty Sambrailo for the season, so they could really use a solid blindside protector moving forward.

  • ESPN’s Chris Mortensen report last night that the Browns are open for business and willing to trade Thomas. if a team is willing to part with a “bounty of picks” for him.
  • Jason La Canfora has yet to hear anything substantive regarding the Browns trade Thomas.
  • However, La Canfora admits that the Browns remain “largely open for business” otherwise ahead of tomorrow’s trade deadline.

Thomas, 30, has been a Hall-of-Fame caliber offensive tackle since the Browns drafted him. He still has another four years remaining on his eight-year, $92 million contract that included $44 million guaranteed.

Thomas stands to make base salaries of $8.8 million (2015), $8.3 million (2016), and $8.8 million (2017-2018)

This season, Thomas has appeared in all eight games for the Browns and is currently rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 2 offensive tackle out of 78 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding a potential trade involving Thomas as the news is available.
