Update:

The Denver Broncos announced Saturday that they’ve officially released FB/TE James Casey and activated DE Derek Wolfe activated from the exempt list.

Adam Caplan of ESPN, citing a league source, reports that the Broncos are releasing veteran FB/TE James Casey on Friday.

  • Caplan notes that while the Broncos used Casey as a fullback, other NFL teams view him as more of a tight end.
  • According to Caplan, the move will be official tomorrow.

Denver needed to create a roster spot for DE Derek Wolfe, who is returning from his four-game suspension.

With this in mind, it sounds like there’s a chance he could catch on with another team at some point in the future, especially considering the lack of depth at tight end.

Casey, 31, signed a one-year, $1.25 million contract with the Broncos back in April. This was a few months after the Eagles cut him loose in a move that freed up $4 million in available cap space for them.

For what it’s worth, Casey previously with the Bengals, Redskins, Cardinals, Broncos, Browns, Titans and Jaguars before signing on with the Broncos.

This season, Casey has been active for three of the team’s four games, but has yet to record a single statistic. Pro Football Focus has him down for playing just 19 snaps this season.
