Broncos Sign QB Christian Ponder

According to Ian Rapoport, the Broncos have signed QB Christian Ponder to a contract on Wednesday.

  • Rapoport notes that Ponder will begin as the team’s No. 3 quarterback and learn the offense during this time.

The Broncos hosted Ponder for a workout on Tuesday, so it appears they were pleased enough with what they saw to sign him to a contract.

This comes after the news that Broncos QB Peyton Manning is out at least two more weeks, so they’re clearly looking for some temporary help while he’s out of the lineup.

Ponder, 27, hasn’t come anywhere near the type of player the Vikings were hoping he could be when they used the No. 12 overall pick on him back in 2011.

The Raiders signed him to a one-year, $2.25 million contract that included a $1.5 million signing bonus back in March. However, he was among their final roster cuts at the start of the season.

Since being released, Ponder has worked out for the Cowboys and Titans, but didn’t receive an offer from either team.

Last year, Ponder appeared in just two games and threw for 222 yards while completing 50 percent of his passes to go along with no touchdowns and two interceptions.
