Mike Klis of 9 News, citing a player source, reports that the Broncos will start Trevor Siemian in their season finale against the Raiders this Sunday, but the plans is still for Paxton Lynch to play in the game.
Earlier in the week, Klis made the case for the Broncos to start Lynch over Siemian, given that not starting him in a meaningless game would imply they may have made a mistake using a first-round pick on him earlier in the year. Klis added that going with Lynch wouldn’t be an indictment of Siemain, considering that he’s currently dealing with some injuries he sustained over the course of the season.
Siemian, 24, was taken in the seventh round of last year’s draft. He’s currently int he second year of his four-year, $2.33 million contract and set to make base salaries of $615,000 and $705,000 over the next two years.
In 2016, Siemian has thrown for 3195 yards while completing 59.3 percent of his passes to go along with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions over the course of 13 games. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 31 quarterback out of 36 qualifying players.
Lynch, 22, was taken with the No. 26 overall pick after the Broncos traded up from No. 31 overall to get their quarterback of the future. He signed a four-year, $9.4 million contract that includes $7.88 guaranteed and is set to make a base salary of $450,000 for the 2016 season.
In 2016, Lynch has completed 49-of-83passes (59 percent) for 497 yards to go along with two touchdowns and an interception for the Broncos over the course of three games.
