Browns Expected To Release QBs Jason Campbell & Brandon Weeden

Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland breaks down the quarterback position for the Browns as they prepare for the offseason.

According to Grossi, another overhaul at the quarterback position is “inevitable.” Grossi writes that quarterbacks Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell are expected to be “odd men out,” with Brian Hoyer returning sometime in April following his rehab from knee surgery.

Grossi mentions that Weeden, a former first-round pick, is likely to be released, despite the fact that he is owed $920,000 guaranteed in 2014.

As for Campbell, the fact that he played over 45 percent of the team’s snaps this past season will increase his 2014 base salary by $1 million due to escalators in his contract, which results in a 2014 base salary of $3.25 million. Grossi believes this is too high for a backup of Campbell’s ability.

Campbell, 32, was just 1-7 as the Browns starter this season, so it makes plenty of sense that they would considering moving in different direction next year. Releasing Campbell would free up $3.2 million in cap space, while releasing Weeden would add cost them $1.999 million, according to Overthecap.com. However, the Browns could designate Weeden as a post-June 1 release, which would eliminate the cap hit.
