Browns Expected To Hold A Competition For Starting QB Job

According to Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren, first-round pick Brandon Weeden will have to earn the Browns’ starting quarterback job, rather than have it handed to him.

We drafted a young quarterback that we think can come in and play right away, but we’re not just going to hand him the football,” Holmgren said, via the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “We have to let (Weeden and Colt McCoy) play and see what happens.”

The Browns have already tried to trade Colt McCoy to make things easier on Weeden, but they obviously found very little interest from other team’s. Holmgren went on to add that there will also be a competition for the team’s backup quarterback position as well.

While this really isn’t surprising to hear from the Browns brass, I would be surprised to see anyone other than Weeden on center to start the season.
