Browns GM John Dorsey Open To Possibly Signing Tyrod Taylor To Extension

Browns GM John Dorsey mentioned in an interview with Kevin Clark of The Ringer that it’s possible they would be open to signing QB Tyrod Taylor to an extension, depending on how things go this season.

“I just want to see Tyrod do what he’s done in the past. He’s a natural born leader. He’s had an excellent camp so far. I want to see it unfold. There may come a point here where I call his representatives in October and say, ‘Let’s strike something up,’” Dorsey said.

Clark followed this up by asking if it would be a disappointment for the team to sign Taylor to an extension after using the No. 1 overall pick on Baker Mayfield.

“Nah, let’s deal with it when it happens,” Dorsey said.

The Browns have made it clear that Taylor will be the team’s starting quarterback this year, so it will be interesting to see what he’s able to do in a contract year with a lot on the line.

Taylor, 28, is a former sixth-round pick of the Ravens back in 2011. After four years in Baltimore, Taylor signed on with the Bills for the 2015 season. Buffalo elected to trade Taylor to the Browns for a third-round pick this past March.

Taylor is entering the final year of a two-year, $30.5 million contract and stands to make a base salary of $10 million next season.

In 2017, Taylor has appeared in 15 games and thrown for 2,799 yards while completing 62.6 percent of his passes to go along with 14 touchdowns and four interceptions. He has also rushed for 427 yards and four touchdowns. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 12 quarterback out of 40 qualifying players.

We have him featured in our Top 25 – 2019 NFL Free Agents list.
