Browns Increased Multi-Year Offer To Terrelle Pryor Slightly Before He Signed With Redskins

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that WR Terrelle Pryor did, in fact, give the Browns an opportunity to match or beat the offer made by the Redskins before he agreed to sign with Washington.

Pryor ultimately agreed to a one-year, $6 million year deal with the Redskins that included $2 million available in incentives and a $3 million signing bonus.

Cabot’s source added that Pryor wanted to return to the Browns, and even held out as long as he could for Cleveland to improve their four-year offer worth close to $8 million and included a “sizable guarantee.”

A contract close to $8 million over four seasons seems like a better deal initially, but as Pryor’s agent tells Cabot, they didn’t want to lock him in for that many years when they feel he could do even better than that in terms of an annual salary with a productive 2017 season.

Interestingly enough, Pryor reportedly had multi-offers between $10-$11 million per year, but they felt he could do even better than that next year.

In the end, the Browns did improve their offer a bit to around $8.5 million per year. However, that still wasn’t enough to convince him to take a multi-year contract.

Both Pryor and the Browns had said they were hoping to get something done this offseason to keep him in Cleveland. Unfortunately, they elected to go with Kenny Britt as Pryor’s replacement and he joined the Redskins soon after.

Pryor, 27, was taken by the Raiders in the third round of the 2011 supplemental draft. He lasted a little over three years in Oakland before he was traded to the Seahawks for a seventh-round pick that ultimately became DB Jonathan Dowling.

Pryor briefly played for the Chiefs and Bengals before later being claimed off of waivers by the Browns. Cleveland elected to cut him loose to make room for RB Robert Turbin last year before bringing him back.

The Browns signed him to a one-year, $1.67 million restricted deal in March of last year. Pryor signed a one-year, $6 million contract with the Redskins that includes another $2 million available in incentives.

In 2016, Pryor appeared in all 16 games and caught 77 passes for 1007 yards receiving and five total touchdowns for the Browns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 31 wide receiver out of 115 qualifying players.
