Browns & Injured DE Desmond Bryant Meet Regarding Salary Compensation For 2016

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Browns and the agent for DE Desmond Bryant met Tuesday to discuss whether the team would be willing to pay a portion of the $6 million Bryant was set to make this season.

Cleveland does not have an obligation to pay Bryant now that he’s suffered a season-ending torn pectoral and has been placed on the non-football injury list.

However, Schefter says that the two parties did not make much progress towards an agreement, but they are expected to continue discussing the situation.

Schefter adds that this situation could be precedent setting for other NFL players, as it would have ramifications for other NFL players who want to work out away from their team’s training facility.

Mary Kay Cabot writes that the Browns have a decision to make regarding whether to pay Bryan the money he’s owed this season or possibly release him.

They have a decision to make,” said Bryant. “We’ll see.”

Bryant, 30, originally signed on with the Raiders as an undrafted free agent out of Harvard before joining the Browns a free agent in 2013. He’s in the fourth year of his five-year, $34 million contract that included $15 million guaranteed. Bryant stands to make base salaries of $6 million and $7 million over the next two years.

In 2015, Bryant appeared in 14 games for the Browns and recorded 33 tackles, six sacks and a forced fumble. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 54 interior defensive lineman out of 123 qualifying players.
