Browns Being Investigated For Possible I.R. Violation Involving Robert Griffin III

Browns HC Hue Jackson told reporters on Friday that the NFL is investigating whether they broke the injured reserve by allowing QB Robert Griffin III to throw passes to a player on their active roster before Thursday night’s game.

“From what I know, we did not break the rules,” Jackson said, via Pro Football Talk. “Obviously, until the investigation is complete, you don’t know. We will wait for them to have that down, but hopefully, everything will be all right as far as that is concerned.”

The Browns would only be in violation of the I.R. rules if Griffin was throwing passes to a player who is currently on the 53-man roster before the start of the game.

Then he cannot be out there throwing to a player, any player at that particular point in time, from what I understand from the rules,” Jackson said.

Mike Florio of PFT received an email from the NFL regarding the situation saying that they’ve spoken to the Browns about the situation but have nothing further to add.

RGIII will undergo another scan in the coming weeks to determine if he’ll be able to return this year.

Griffin, 26, signed RGIII to a two-year, $15 million contract that includes $6.75 million guaranteed.  He’ll make a base salary of $3.25 million for the 2016 season.

The Browns will face a decision regarding Griffin next March, as he has a $750,000 roster bonus at that point. If the Browns pick up his bonus, RGIII would be paid a $6 million base salary with $750,000 more being available in per-game bonuses.

After one game, Griffin has thrown for 190 yards while completing 12 of 26 pass attempts (46.15 percent) to go along with no touchdowns and an interception. He added another 37 yards rushing for the Browns during the game.

We’ll have more regarding this situation as the news is available.
