Browns LT Joe Thomas Undecided About Whether To Retire

Browns LT Joe Thomas said on Wednesday that he remains undecided about retiring or continuing his NFL career.

There’s some days you go back and forth,” said Thomas, via Scott Petrak. “It’s just kind of how you feel. Had a lot of time to think and spend some time with the family but not ready definitively to make a decision one way or the other just yet.”

Thomas added that he is not concerned about the elbow injury that ended his 2017 season and that it will not factor into his decision.

“I’m not worried about that. The elbow is something that’ll take care of itself,” said Thomas. “I feel confident the rehab has gone well and it will continue to go well. Really for me, knee and back are the primary issues that I’ve been dealing with a number of years.

Thomas, 32, is a former first-round pick of the Browns back in 2007. He was in the seventh year of his eight-year, $92 million contract that included $44 million when Cleveland reworked his contract to make him the highest paid offensive lineman in 2018.

In his new contract, the Browns have him $3 million in new money over 2017 and 2018 and a $1.5 million roster bonus. Thomas’ 2018 base salary increased $1.5 million to an annual salary of $10.3 million.

Thomas is now scheduled to earn $13.5 million for 2018, making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL. He is now entering the final year of his contract.

In 2017, Thomas appeared in seven games for the Browns and was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 4 offensive tackle out of 74 qualifying players
