Browns Place QB Robert Griffin III On Injured Reserve, Could Be Done For The Year

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that it will be “very tough” for Browns QB Robert Griffin III to return this season after being placed on injured reserve Monday with a fractured coracoid bone in his left shoulder.

• Rapoport mentions that even after he’s evaluation in three or four weeks, he may still need to undergo surgery, which could extend the amount of time he’s out.

The Cleveland Browns announced Monday that they’re placing QB Robert Griffin III on injured reserve with a fractured bone in his shoulder.

RGIII is expected to miss an”extended period” of the 2016 season after tests revealed he has a fractured coracoid bone in his left shoulder. The injury won’t require surgery, and the Browns plan to re-evaluate RGIII in 3-4 weeks.

However, the earlier RGIII can return is Week 10 if Cleveland elects to bring him back at that point in the year.

Joel Corry points out that Griffin now has no shot of earning the $3.5 million in playtime and performance incentives that were included in his contract for the 2016 season.

“It’s very unfortunate, Robert came in and has worked extremely hard to learn our offense and earn the respect of his teammates,” Browns coach Hue Jackson said. “This is a tough loss because everyone has seen how invested he has been in this team and his dedication to the work needed to improve his craft. We all know these are the realities of the NFL, injuries occur and you have to find ways to overcome them so they don’t impede your progress. Robert will do everything in his power to rehab and get healthy but Josh McCown is on this roster for a reason and we have great confidence in him. He is more than capable. His veteran presence has been an asset to our team throughout our process of preparing for the season. We look forward to him assuming the role of the starter and leading our offensive unit.”

Peter Schrager of FOX Sports is hearing that Browns QB Robert Griffin III is hurt and could be out for a while.

• Adam Schefter confirms that RGIII has a “potentially serious” shoulder injury and will undergo more tests today.

According to Mary Kay Cabot, it would not be surprising to see Browns QB Robert Griffin III sit out of the team’s Week 2 game against the Ravens based on his comments that he’s in pain from the shoulder injury he suffered on Sunday, the way he moved post game and the fact that he needed an MRI Monday.

According to Andrew Gribble, Browns QB Robert Griffin III will undergo more tests on Monday regarding his left shoulder injury.

Browns QB Robert Griffin III told reporters on Sunday he suffered a sprained left shoulder during their loss to the Eagles.

“I can move my left arm,” Griffin said,  via Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal. “I’m in pain, but I’ll be OK. Just continue to monitor it.”

RGIII did, however, say that he believes he’ll be fine for their Week 2 game against the Ravens.

“Yeah, we’ll see more tomorrow, see how my shoulder’s feeling and just move on from there,” Griffin said.

Griffin took a hit late into the fourth quarter, which led to backup QB Josh McCown warming up on the sideline. Although, RGIII was still able to finish out the game, despite the injury.

Griffin, 26, signed RGIII to a two-year, $15 million contract that includes $6.75 million guaranteed.  He’ll make a base salary of $3.25 million for the 2016 season.

The Browns will face a decision regarding Griffin next March, as he has a $750,000 roster bonus at that point. If the Browns pick up his bonus, RGIII would be paid a $6 million base salary with $750,000 more being available in per-game bonuses.

After one game, Griffin has thrown for 190 yards while completing 12 of 26 pass attempts (46.15 percent) to go along with no touchdowns and an interception. He added another 37 yards rushing for the Browns during the game.
