Browns Release DB Brandon Hughes, DL Brian Sanford, QB Alex Tanney & RB Fozzy Whitaker

The Cleveland Browns announced the release of DB Brandon Hughes, DL Brian Sanford, QB Alex Tanney and RB Fozzy Whitaker on Monday.

Tanney, 26, had two years remaining on his three-year, $1.485 million contract. However, his odds of cracking the Browns 53-man roster were almost nonexistent given that they drafted Johnny Manziel and added Connor Shaw as an undrafted free agent.

Hughes, 27, is a former fifth-round draft pick of the Chargers. He has released by the Eagles with an injury settlement back in September of last year and signed on with the Browns this January. He appeared in just one game and totaled a single tackle last season.

Sanford, 26, has one year remaining on his contract that included a base salary of $645,000 for the 2014 season. He signed with the Browns as an undrafted free agent back in 2010, but was later claimed off of waivers by the Raiders before he ultimately re-signed with Cleveland last December.

Whitaker, 25, signed on with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent out of Texas back in 2012. The Browns claimed him off of waivers from the Chargers in September of last year.
