Browns Release QB Charlie Whitehurst, Promote QB Kevin Hogan & DL Gabe Wright

The Cleveland Browns announced Tuesday that they’ve released QB Charlie Whitehurst and promoted QB Kevin Hogan and DL Gabe Wright to their active roster.

  • The Browns also signed WR Mitch Mathews to their practice squad.

Whitehurst, 34, is a former third-round pick of the Chargers back in 2006. He spent four years in San Diego before playing for a number of teams including the Seahawks, Titans and most recently for the Colts.

The Browns just signed him to a contract a few weeks ago.

In 2016, Whitehurst has appeared in one game and completed 14 of 24 pass attempts (58.3 percent) for 182 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Wright, 24, is a former fourth-round pick of the Lions back in 2015. He was unfortunately among their roster cuts coming out of the preseason but later signed to the Browns’ practice squad last week.

The Browns promoted Wright to their active roster a few weeks into the regular season before cutting him loose soon after. Cleveland did re-sign Wright to their practice squad.

In 2016, Wright appeared in two games for the Browns and recorded one tackle and a pass defense.
