Browns Releasing S Donte Whitner, Free Up $3.95M In Cap Room

The Cleveland Browns announced that they’ve released S Donte Whitner.

“It is important for us to thank Donte for all of his contributions to the Cleveland Browns over the last two seasons,” said Browns executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown. “His passion for this city and dedication to his craft was contagious. These are difficult decisions to make but we felt it was the best decision for the Browns at this time. We wish him the best as he continues his career.”

Whitner, 30, is in the third year of his four-year, $28 million contract that includes $13 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $6.2 million in 2016 and another $6.3 million in 2017 over the remainder of the agreement.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Whitner would free up $3.95 million in available cap space while creating $4.5 million in dead money.

In 2015, Whitner appeared in 14 games and recorded 81 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble, no interceptions and four pass defenses for the Browns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 24 safety out of 89 qualifying players.
