Browns S Tashaun Gipson Won’t Attend OTAs, Holding Out For An Extension

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Browns restricted free agent S Tashaun Gipson won’t be in attendance for the start of OTAs.

  • Rapoport adds that Gipson plans to hold out for a contract extension from the team.

This really shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, seeing as Gipson has yet to sign his restricted tender. Cleveland used a second-round tender on Gipson that will pay him $2.356 million for the 2015 season.

The problem for Gipson is that the Browns can wait him out if they aren’t interested in meeting his asking price. Gipson needs another year of accrued service time in order to become an unrestricted free agent next year, so he’ll eventually have report to the team.

Of course, the Browns could strain their relationship with Gipson if they were to shut down negotiations.

Pat McMananmon recently mentioned that Gipson could be targeting a similar contract to the one recently signed by Patriots S Devin McCourty, who walked away with a $47.5 million, $28.5 million guaranteed and included a $15 million signing bonus.

Gipson, 24, signed on with the Browns as an undrafted free agent out of Wyoming back in 2012.

Last year, he appeared in 11 games for the Browns and recorded 52 tackles, six interceptions with one being returned for a touchdown, a forced fumble and eight pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 10 safety out of 87 qualifying players.
