Browns Starting Rookie QB Cody Kessler In Week 3, Could Add Veteran QB

Update:

Browns HC Hue Jackson confirmed that veteran QB Josh McCown is out for Week 3’s game against the Dolphins and added that they expect to bring in a veteran quarterback at some point this week.

In regards to McCown’s injury, Jackson said he’s dealing with a shoulder/clavicle issue right now, per Nate Ulrich.

Jackson confirmed that rookie QB Cody Kessler will start this week and mentioned that there’s a possibility they could promote rookie Kevin Hogan from their practice squad in the coming days.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Browns are not placing McCown on injured reserve, which means they expect him to be back at some point this season.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Browns will start third-round QB Cody Kessler in Week 3’s game against the Dolphins after Josh McCown sustained a shoulder injury this past weekend.

Earlier in the day, Ian Rapoport mentioned that that McCown is in “excruciating pain” after he finished Sunday’s game, despite the shoulder injury.

Mary Kay Cabot said that it’s possible the Browns will explore their options at quarterback this week but it seems like they would likely be in the market for a backup option right now and see how things go with Kessler.

Kessler, 23, was taken with the No. 93 overall pick by the Browns a few weeks ago. He was an interesting selection for the Browns, considering that they elected to trade out of the No. 2 spot and passed on Carson Wentz.

Kessler signed four-year contract worth $3,004,788 that included a signing bonus of $664,788 with the Browns.

During his four-year career at USC, Kessler threw for 10,339 yards while completing 67.5 percent of his passes to go along with 88 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.
